Sexton's breakout album is a delight for anyone who loves to hear the violin (fiddles don't play Bach). 'Coffee at Midnight' transcends genre with an eclectic mix ranging from Bach to Monroe to Knopfler. Sexton plays them all with beauty and talent. Vocals take a backseat to the instruments on this CD. On the haunting sounds of 'Sailing to Philadelphia' the mix could have reinforced the vocals a bit more, but it still comes across as a trip into the past that you'll enjoy. The only number that seems an odd choice is 'Eleanor Rigby.' Dudley Connell does a good job with the vocals but it doesn't fit well with the overall flavor of the album. There are plenty of mood shifts, going from Monroe's 'Brown County Breakdown' to the self-penned Latin beat of 'Latin Eyes' and the pop flavors of 'Lover's Concerto' (once covered by Doyle Lawson). Perhaps the most beautiful tune is 'Last Night in Louisville,' a melody that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the well known 'Ashokan Farewell.' The following 'Dulcinea.' is quite different, a balladesque peice whose name is evoked from a female character from Cervantes' 'Don Quixote' and lets the musicians show us their sensitive quiet sides. In 'Mr. Sowieso,' the quartet changes tempo. This infernal swinging number brings us almost to tears with its ever pressing, driving, unstoppable walking bass lines. We are given a chance to breathe again with 'Yes But' and its contemplative atmosphere. This is the ideal track for those late night hours. Finally we are offered two tracks in which bassist Stefan Neldner displays his virtuosic string art. Whereas in 'Elusive' his nimble fingers sprint across the fretboard, in 'Nebula' he opens our hearts with his warm, singing lilts on fretless bass. After some 70 albums Jasper van't Hof offers us in 'oeuvre' an accumulated wealth of experience from his career. For four and a half decades the man from Enschede has been prominent on the European jazz stage. On their debut „LÃ¥vesalg' (2011) the Norwegian duo focussed on their mother tongue, whilst for „You' the two Spellemansprisen-awarded musicians translated nine songs from Nordic songwriters into English. The result is as surprising as it is captivating.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSome of the melodies and lyrics seem familiar, like musical postcards from the past. In part this is due to the outstanding song writing skills of the original artists, but the congenial translations and interpretations of Live \u0026amp; Lien definitely play a major role. Live Maria Roggen has the ability to switch between styles seamlessly. This is particularly impressive on „Scatterheart', a song by Icelandic singer Björk. Roggen playfully integrates Björks eccentric style into her own, thus making the song her own. Throughout the whole album Roggen is in control at all times, showing a large scale of emotions. Next to Roggen, Helge Lien proves on „You' why you might call him the single most important piano player in Norway today. He delicately creates spaces and atmospheres for Roggen, dynamically follows her lead, only taking the center of attention when it is necessary.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere is always joy in listening to a duo that creates this type of magic together, yet with Live \u0026amp; Lien the joy is paired with a sense of gratefulness.
