Acrobat/Trapeze

Acrobat is a UK-based record label specializing in collectors’ and re-issue CDs across just about every genre of music. They have CDs by some of the biggest names in music, from Frank Sinatra to Duke Ellington, Patsy Cline to Willie Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis to Bill Haley, as well as a huge selection of more hard-to-find artists. Knowing that there is demand for specialist, niche and collectors' music all around the world, their strategy is to ensure that artists and recordings in genres which are often not given priority by the major companies are as widely available as possible. They also have a fabulous selection of compilation CDs, including the popular The British Hit Parades, America's Greatest Hits and Jukebox Hits series, along with other themed collections in most genres.

MVD is the exclusive distributor of Trapeze/Acrobat product in North America.

This exclusive 5-CD collection brings together every Number One in the US record charts of the 1950s as published in Billboard. It uses the 'Best Sellers in Stores' chart as well as the Top 100 and Hot 100 when they were launched. The 124 tracks chart the course of a momentous decade in popular music with the familiar domain of the traditional artists of dance bands, variety, radio and the movies being overtaken by the rock 'n' roll phenomenon, as mass media gave the baby boom generation a voice while the world emerged from post-war austerity. It's an extraordinary, fascinating and hugely entertaining kaleidoscope of popular music. For British and European audiences, it highlights both the influence the US charts had over what happened in the UK and also some of the differences between the markets, offering not only insight into the eclectic melting-pot of musical genres in the USA, but also some collectable tracks that never saw the light of day in Britain. Needless to say, it features some of the biggest names and landmark recordings of the post-war era, and will be a fantastic souvenir to remind those of a certain age of their wider musical roots.

Track Listing
Disc 1:

Gene Autry - Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

The Andrews Sisters - I Can Dream, Can't I'

The Ames Brothers - Rag Mop

Red Foley - Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy

Teresa Brewer - Music! The trumpet player counted Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and Art Blakey among his many American admirers and through the tireless promulgation of A&R man Tony Hall eventually landed a record contract with the prestigious Blue Note label. In 1959, after carving a controversial reputation on the London scene, he abandoned the UK for New York City, the very heart of the modern jazz scene. Featuring the contents of no less than six original LPs, various EP releases and tracks released on multi-artist compilations, this 5-CD set tells the whole story, including every recording Reece made under his own name between 1954 and 1962, on both sides of the Atlantic, together with performances made in collaboration with the great multi-instrumentalist Victor Feldman and as a member of the New Jazz Group. The leader's distinctive playing and composing - mixing early elements of exotic world music and pure Hard Bop - are complemented by a whole phalanx of modern jazz talent including saxophonists Hank Mobley, Joe Farrell, Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott, fellow trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Wynton Kelly and the legendary drummers Art Taylor and Phil Seamen. This release also features a comprehensive booklet essay by noted jazz saxophonist and writer Simon Spillett.

Track Listing
Disc Walker - The Ultimate Collection 1929-57 (CD)

T-Bone Walker was one of the most important and influential pioneers of the electric blues

Guitarist, singer and songwriter T-Bone Walker was one of the most important and influential pioneers of the electric blues sound, specially the style most closely associated with the West Coast - he was one of the first to amplify his guitar, which he had done by 1940, and was a key influence on B.B. King and Chuck Berry. This collection is about as comprehensive an anthology of his most important recordings as it is possible to achieve. It comprises 129 tracks in a terrific value 5-CD set, and effectively encompasses every track he recorded through to the end of the 1950s. Beginning with two early tracks recorded in 1929, it includes important performances from the early '40s with other leaders' bands before the many sessions he recorded under his own name for the Black & White, Capitol, Comet and Imperial labels through to the mid-'50s, along with the tracks from the LP 'T-Bone Blues' which he recorded for Atlantic in 1956-7, and which many consider his finest work. It naturally includes the blues standards and chart hits for which he is best known, such as 'Call it Stormy Monday', 'Bobby Sox Blues' and 'West End Blues'. It is a fine showcase for his distinctive guitar style and sound, and an ideal purchase for anyone wanting a thorough insight

Track King - Complete Singles As & Bs 1949-62 (CD)

B.B. King, was without doubt one of the most illustrious exponents of the blues in the history of popular music

B.B. King, who died in May 2015 at the age of 89, was without doubt one of the most illustrious exponents of the blues in the history of popular music. As an important and pioneering innovator, guitarist, singer, songwriter and performer, he ranks among the legendary personalities of the genre, alongside the likes of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker. Perhaps more than anything, he was a hugely respected gentleman of the blues, one of the finest ambassadors it has ever had, and a massively influential figure in terms of his impact on the emerging stars of the '50s and '60s who themselves have become global icons in the rock world. His distinctive and unique guitar style, which always attracted the comment that 'he could say more with one note than others could with a thousand', marks him down as one of the masters of his art. This great-value 123-track 5-CD collection brings together all the A & B sides of his single releases from his debut in 1949 on the Bullet label through his releases on RPM and then Kent up to 1962. It naturally includes some of his best-known and most important recordings, and gives a definitive overview of his work during the first decade and more of his career, as well as providing a marvellous showcase for his matchless style and technique. It is an ideal anthology for those wishing to have a substantial body of his work in their collection.

Track Listing
Disc 1:

Miss Martha King

When Your Baby Packs Up And Goes

Got The Blues

Take A Swing With Me

Mistreated Woman

B.B. Rarities and hits rub shoulders from legendary acts like The Harptones and The Willows. Amongst the rarities is the first CD release for The Impressions Swirl 45. Like our other collections this features all the 78s and/or 45s that were money-spinners on Jukeboxes across the world.

Track Listing

Stormy Monday Blues

Last Night (And Now Tonight Again)

Lonesome Lover Blues

Cottage For Sale

I'm In The Mood For Love

Prisoner Of Love

You Call It Madness But I Call It Love

Sophisticated Lady

Everything I Have Is Yours

Fools Rush In

Blue Moon

Bewildered

Caravan

Somehow

Temptation

My Foolish Heart

I Wanna Be Loved

I Apologise

Coquette

Send My Baby Back To Me

St. Louis Blues

Additional Details

Label: Acrobat

Genre: Jazz

Release Date: 11/08/11

UPC: 824046401924

The latest release in our new series that offers the American Juke Box/Harlem Hit Parade/Race Record/Rhythm & Blues chart hits by a selection of the biggest stars of the 1940's and 1950's swing, jazz, jump blues and R&B scenes, features the legendary Count Basie. Their harmonies were those inherited from Darby And Tarlton (ACRCD 4016) and their instrumental sound, constructed around Howard's slide playing, was vastly different from the finger-picked guitars and mandolins of similar artists. The most important groups include The Marathons who enjoyed the huge hit record 'Peanut Butter' and recorded many other novelty songs in a style reminiscent of The Coasters, included here is the entire content of their only LP release. The other group who enjoyed national fame are The Olympics who are represented by five tracks that were not originally released. The Robins were affiliated to The Coasters as the detailed booklet notes will explain. The whole CD was sourced from original EMI master tapes and archive materials and compiled at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Track Listing

Sioux War Dance

Assembly Line

Baia

Sewing Circle

Hora Stacato

Blue Violins

The Whistling Gypsy

Fun Fair

Piccadilly Hoe Down

Moonfleet

Blue Tango

Unforgettable

Belle Of The Ball

Woodpeckers Waltz

Waltz Of Paree

Intermezzo

The Waltzing Cat

The Marching Strings

Meet Mr. Callaghan

Dream Of Yesterday

Ecstasy

Lady Of Spain

The Waltzing Bugle Boy

Lazy Cowboy

Additional Details

Label: Acrobat

Genre: Adult Contemporary/MOR

Release Date: 11/08/11

UPC: 824046403621

Rare live performance from one of the greatest of all Blues singers of the late 1940's and early 50's. Truth be known Jimmie Lunceford's Orchestra was far and away the most popular swing band with Black audiences, ever. Basie and Ellington are considered the epitome of hit Black bands, but Lunceford was way up there with them. This CD brings together all of Lunceford's biggest chart hits. No band could compete with them for dancing, but until now most CDs by Lunceford have been part of a chronological series or a package geared more to the jazz fan rather than the R&B or dance fan, which is what you get here.

Track Listing

Rhythm Is Our Business

Swanee River

Organ Grinder's Swing

T'Aint Good (Like A Nickel Made Of Wood)

(This Is) My Last Affair

Slumming On Park Avenue

The Merry Go Round Broke Down

For Dancers Only

Posin'

The First Time I Saw You

Put On Your Old Grey Bonnet

T'Aint What You Do (It's The Way That You Do It)

Blues In The Night Pts 1 & 2

Life Is Fine

I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town Pt 1

I'm Gonna Move To The Outskirts Of Town Pt 2

It Had To Be You

Back Door Stuff Pt 1

Back Door Stuff Pt 2

I Dream A Lot About You

Buzz, Buzz, Buzz

Baby, Are You Kiddin''

The Honeydripper

Cement Mixer (Put-Ti-Put-Ti)

Call The Police

Additional Details

Label: Acrobat

Genre: R & B

Release Date: 11/08/11

UPC: 824046407629

Andy Kirk studied music under Wilberforce Whiteman, father of Jazz pioneer Paul Whiteman. Kirk started playing bass and tuba in Denver with George Morrison's band, and in 1925 he joined Terrence Holder's Dark Clouds Of Joy. In 1929 he took over leadership of the band (which was renamed Andy Kirk's Twelve Clouds Of Joy) and moved to Kansas City. During 1929-30 they recorded some excellent hot performances with such players as Mary Lou Williams and violinist Claude Williams. In 1936 the band relocated to New York and immediately had two huge pop hits. Like our other collections this features all the 78s that were money-spinners on Jukeboxes across the world.

Track Listing

Twenty Four Hours A Day

These Foolish Things

No Regrets

A Fine Romance

The Way You Look Tonight

Who Loves You'

I Can't Give You Anything But Love

Pennies From Heaven

I've Got My Love To Keep You Warm

This Year's Kisses

(This Is) My Last Affair

The Mood That I'm In

Carelessly

Mean To Me

A Sailboat In The Moonlight

Getting Some Fun Out Of Life

I'm Gonna Lock My Heart (And Throw Away The Key)

Strange Fruit

God Bless The Child

Trav'lin' Light

Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be)

Good Morning Heartache

Additional Details

Label: Acrobat

Genre: R & B

Release Date: 11/08/11

UPC: 824046407827

Our hugely popular Jukebox Hits series goes from strength to strength with this wonderful collection of tracks from the one and only Ella Fitzgerald. On this album we have gathered together all of her chart entries on the Billboard R&B chart and have included 'Crying In The Chapel' which makes its CD debut in this package. Few artists have achieved such acclaim and her position in the world of music is noted by the fact that she is known worldwide by her Christian name alone. On this collection you will discover that most of her R&B hits at this time were in the company of other artists like Louis Jordan, The Ink Spots, Louis Armstrong and The Delta Rhythm Boys. This is an Ella Fitzgerald CD for Blues and R&B fans and hopefully will introduce her to some new fans as well as delighting her dedicated fans worldwide.

Track Listing

My Heart And I Decided

Cow Cow Boogie

Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall

I'm Making Believe

It's Only A Paper Moon

The Frim Fram Sauce

You Won't Be Satisfied (Until You Break My Heart)

Stone Cold Dead In The Market

Petootie Pie

I Love You For Sentimental Reasons

It's A Pity To Say Goodnight

That's My Desire

My Happiness

It's Too Soon To Know

Baby It's Cold Outside

I'll Never Be Free

Can Anyone Explain' (No, No, No)

Smooth Sailing

Walkin' By The River

Crying In The Chapel

Additional Details

Label: Acrobat

Genre: Jazz

Release Date: 11/08/11

UPC: 824046407926

This first ever CD release for this pioneering Gospel group brings together 30 inspiring examples of early Black Gospel music, complete with comprehensive liner notes from gospel expert Opal Louis Nations and many rare and unseen illustrations. Brother Bones a one-time shoeshine boy; working at stands in the vestibules of local barbershops.' While shining, he would whistle, snap his shoeshine rag and pop his brushes in rhythm to records being played on an old Victrola.' Brother Bones became known around town as 'Whistling Sam.'' He would also tap dance and play the bones and knives, perfecting a style which used four bones in each hand whereas most bones players used only two. By far, the most famous version of this much recorded song is the whistling, bone-clacking recording by Brother Bones and his Shadows. Recorded in the late 1940's and adopted in 1952 as the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters, this catchy tune has been played during their pre-game warm-ups and throughout their games for decades.' Millions around the world have heard it and it is probably in the top ten most listened to recordings in history.' So important to the Harlem Globetrotters is 'Sweet Georgia Brown' that it has become their aural trademark, this is the first release devoted entirely to this long forgotten but instantly recognizable artist.

Track Listing

Sweet Georgia Brown

Charleston

Red Wing

Margie

China Town

Doll Dance

Jada

Jive Melody

Rosetta

Jingle Jangle Jingle

Five Foot Two Eyes Of Blue

San

Listen To The Mockingbird

Marie

Poor Butterfly

How Am I To Know

Lou-Easy-An-I-A

Additional Details

Label: Acrobat

Genre: Jazz

Release Date: 11/08/11

UPC: 824046408121

We continue our series highlighting the American Juke Box/Harlem Hit Parade/Race Record/Rhythm & Blues chart hits by a selection of the biggest stars of the 1940's and 1950's swing, jazz, jump blues and R&B scenes. The chart was entitled 'The Harlem Hit Parade' and initially the chart was indeed compiled from a comparatively tiny sample of shops and jukeboxes situated in the Harlem borough of New York. In 1942 the racial lines were much less defined when it came to popular music and Southern Blacks were as equally fond of Country and Hillbilly music as blues and R & B. By contrast the comparatively sophisticated residents of Harlem were equally happy to drop a coin in the slot to listen to Frank Sinatra singing with The Dorsey Band or buying the platter in such quantities that it was able to climb as high as No 2 alongside more down home sides from Chicago based artists like Tampa Red and Lil Green. The very first No 1 was Andy Kirk's 'Take It And Git' and most of the decade's biggest stars featured in the charts first 11 weeks, The Ink spots, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday and Louis Jordan.

Track Listing

Andy Kirk & His Clouds Of Joy - Take It And Git

Freddie Slack And His Orchestra - Cow Cow Boogie

Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five - I'm Gonna Leave You On The Outskirts Of Town

Lil Gretta - Let's Be Friends

Earl Hines And His Orchestra - Stormy Monday Blues

Freddie Slack And His Orchestra - Mr. Five By Five

Paul Whiteman And His Orchestra - Trav'lin' Light

Lucky Millinder And His Orchestra - When The Lights Go On Again (All Over The World)

Barney Bigard's Orchestra - C Blues

Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five - What's The Use Of Getting Sober

Duke Ellington And His Famous Orchestra - Hayfoot Strawfoot

Fats Waller - The Jitterbug Waltz

Tampa Red And His Hokum Jug Band - Let Me Play With You Poodle

Bea Booze - See See Rider Blues

The King Cole Trio - That Ain't Right

Tommy Dorsey Orchestra w/ Frank Sinatra & The Piep Pipers - There Are Such Things

The Southern Sons - Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition

Jimmie Lunceford And His Orchestra - It Had To Be You

Erskine Hawkins And His Orchestra - Bicycle Bounce

Ink Spots - Don't Get Around Much Anymore

Additional Details

Label: Acrobat

Genre: R & B

Release Date: 11/08/11

UPC: 824046418625

Another release in our highly successful Jukebox Hits series. He produced, and with his band played on the original recording of 'Hound Dog' with 'Big Momma' Thornton, featured here and which has since become synonymous with the birth of Rock and Roll following the 1956 Elvis rendition. He produced and played on Johnny Ace's 'Pledging My Love', and produced some of Little Richard's earliest recordings. In 1950 he had ten songs that made the Top 10 on Billboard Magazine's Best Selling Retail Rhythm & Blues Records list and became the hottest musical attraction in black America and was described as the most influential white musician on black music. He discovered many great Rhythm and Blues singers such as Esther Phillips, Willie 'Mae' Thornton, Etta James, Jackie Wilson and many more. He has also recorded and produced with some of the greatest names in black music history. His career expanded into Radio and Television in the 1950s and 'The Johnny Otis Show' ran on national TV for 8 years. Now in his 80s Johnny Otis still presents a weekly radio show, teaches at The University Of California at Berkeley and is widely respected as a musician, writer, producer, artist, author and historian of American history. Johnny Otis's song writing credits include 'Every Beat of My Heart', (a song he wrote originally for Jackie Wilson, but was made a hit by Gladys Knight and the Pips), 'Roll With Me Henry', (also known as 'The Wallflower'), 'So Fine', 'Willie and the Hand Jive' (which sold over 1.5 million copies), and many, many others. Johnny has been inducted into the Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, and into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He remains active in the recording studio. His 1994 release 'Spirit of the Black Territory Bands' received a Grammy nomination.

Track Listing

Drifting Blues

That's Your Last Boogie

If It's So Baby

Double Crossing Blues

Mistrustin' Blues

Misery

Cry Baby

Cupid Boogie

Deceivin' Blues

Dreamin' Blues

Wedding Boogie

Far Away Blues (Xmas Blues)

Rockin' Blues

Gee Baby

Mambo Boogie

All Night Long

Sunset To Dawn

Call Operator 210

Hound Dog

Please Forgive Me

Additional Details

Label: Acrobat

Genre: R & B

Release Date: 11/08/11

UPC: 824046419929

Continuing the development of our series of Black Gospel collections we now present one of the most exciting singers of the early fifties. Brother Cecil Shaw made only 18 recordings in his short career, all of which are presented here, but they were hugely influential over the groups that became popular in the later Fifties. Ray Charles was a big fan, and there is a brief mention of Shaw's congregation in the recent 'Ray' movie as his first wife was a member of the Union Spiritual harmonisers. The April issue of the magazine Blues and Rhythm featured a three-page article on Shaw all of which is reproduced in the booklet notes. At Acrobat we pride ourselves in finding albums that, although rare, are nonethe less in demand, and since there is no other, or at least that we can find, product out there this fits the category of rare, wonderful but in demand that we so favour. Many jazz aficionados remember Lane because he was briefly an alumnus of the school for precocious jazz talent that was the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, occupying the star tenor saxophonist seat previously filled by Illinois Jacquet and Arnett Cobb. He also played with the Earl Hines Orchestra and additionally pursued a solo career, at the height of the honking sax craze, in R&B. His solo recordings for the Savoy, Coral, Sunrise and Apollo labels are included in this album which features fantastic recordings taken from all stages of his career. The notes contain a full detailed history of Morris Lane written by the world renowned R&B expert Dave Penny. Smith was a key member of the Erskine Hawkins Orchestra from 1944 until its demise, but by then, the late 40's, his amazing skill on Alto Sax had meant that he had established himself as the most in-demand session musician and as if that was not enough he was the house bandleader for the Apollo label where he recorded with all of the labels biggest stars including The Larks, Eddie Mack and Willie Bryant. In addition he made a number of recordings of his own and these have become sought after rarities in their own right. He married R&B singer Ruth Brown and naturally worked with her both live and in the studio, examples of which round out this overview of the early years of one of the all time great tenor saxophonists.

Track Listing

Gator Tail (Part 1)

Gator Tail (Part 2)

Let 'Em Roll

Doin' The 'Gator Tail

On My Own

Chuck's Chuckles

Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man

Dance Of The Lady Bug

Gonna Hoot & Holler

Saturday Night

Coole Mama

Blow Jackson Blow

More Blues At Midnight

Later For The 'Gator

The Call Of The 'Gator

Steam Roller Blues

Beauty Parlor Gossip

Gator's Groove

Harlem Nocturne

Rock!
