The present CD contains a set of Bach organ chorales for Advent and Christmas. In addition to the four isolated works suitable for the Christmas season, it includes all the compositions for Advent and Christmas from the Orgelbüchlein collection. Most of the 46 organ works in this renowned collection were composed while Bach was working at the Weimar court in 1708-1717. Not unlike the Well-Tempered Clavier with its recurring preludes and fugues, the Orgelbüchlein is an interesting document of the way Bach repeatedly set out to solve a problem, each time fi nding fresh solutions. In these organ works, his task was to compose music based on well-known chorale melodies used in church services. Despite some impressive successes (1994's UNESCO Composers' Rostrum Prize, for example), he has not achieved the sustained worldwide success enjoyed by Saariaho, Salonen and Gramophone Contemporary Music Award winner Magnus Lindberg. This may be because his music remained closer to Heininen's manner, wedding traditional forms such as the symphony and concerto to a modernist language rooted in serialism.But there was always more to Hämeenniemi's music (and to Heininen's) than dour dodecaphony, as Ondine's disc of his first two symphonies (1982-83, 1988) and Violin Concerto (1990-91) proved. The Third Symphony (1999) shows that he has evolved a postmodernist free-tonal style of some appeal. Cast like the First in a single movement in two distinct sections, it is built almost exclusively from a single theme that acts as a thematic reservoir as well as the basis for variations. As much fantasia as symphony, the work impresses with its calm intensity, not unlike Pettersson but less expressively obsessive.The composer describes his symphony and Viola Concerto (2000) as 'sister works' and they do project a sense of kinship. Yet both are independent, built from different material - though sharing an exotic, almost modal quality at times - and finely scored. The works are played with great feeling by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, with Tommi Aalto a fine viola soloist and Oramo and Lintu exemplary interpreters. Alba's sound has presence and depth. Through research we continually get a clearer picture of Buxtehude as aperson, a picture which is enhanced by the stylistic variations in Ius music. We know very little of his childhood, but of his duties in Lubeck we know considerably more. He functioned as the church's treasurer, he wrote poetry, he arranged the famous concen series Abendmusik, he was very hospitable and he had a good knowledge of languages. Besides his two mother tongues German and Danish he knew Latin, Greek, French, Italian and Swedish. In a very natural way Buxtehude took his place in the society of Lubeck since we know that he was ranked as the most respected musician in the city and thereby had good contacts with leading politicians and with representatives of business life. On the other hand he belonged to the so-called foulth class and the fawning plu'ases in his letters indicate that he Imew his place well. Buxtehude's organ works build upon the improvisational style of 17th centulY Germany. In spite of this suprisingly many of his compostions have been written down. Buxtehude's 26 preludes with fugues can possibly be described as fantasies arising from the fugues. His chorales are 47 in number while 12 carlZona compostions have been preserved. In other respects the order of the compositions appears to be such as to provide variety both of instruments and of mood. There are thus two solos for violin,two for recorder, two for gamba, two for transverse flute and two for oboe, all with continuo. The harpsichord solos consist of a prelude and dance movements. Each of the solo instruments features in four ensembles. Of the fifteen potential combinations Telemann has for some reason failed to make use of recorder and transverse flute, oboe and gamba, violin and harpsichord. Of the three it's the shortest in playing time but then all three are within hailing distance of an hour. The Violin Concerto dates from 1943 but was lost and the work rewritten in 1954. Although the original score was found in 1957 the rewrite is what we hear from Pekka Kauppinen. It's a lovely work which will appeal to you if you enjoy the first concertos of Szymanowski and Prokofiev. You will also need to be able to live with pages that in their contours inevitably recall the Sibelius concerto and the idyllic sense of Slavonic nocturnals and perfumed air. The finale is more urgent, zany and even manic - a sort of moto perpetuo without quite fitting the definition. It ends on a very cleever downbeat pizzicato. The concerto lasts for more than half the duration of the CD. I recall hearing Jennifer Koh's version on Bis some years ago and my recollection is that Koh's tone is more full-lipped; I would need to get hold of a copy to check. Kauppinen is in any event a most touching and virtuosic guide. The Suite for String Orchestra (1937) is the same undemanding 'pleasantrie' that appears on Alba ABCD 242 recalling Rakastava at one moment and Sibelius's more intense works the next - for example in the stormy flighted final Allegro vivo. The pellucidly scored Sérénades joyeuses is unmistakably influenced by neo-classical Stravinsky and the absurdist fantasies of Prokofiev's Love of Three Oranges. As ever with Klami the four miniature movements are wonderfully concise and inspiration is not overstretched. Use of sharply etched percussion, hieratic trombone, edgily rhythmic cells and woodwind coloration make this a very distinctive mix. Finally we get the five movements of Scenes from a Puppet Show have the sharply defined horizon of de Falla's Harpsichord Concerto softened by the lacy-fragile and slightly melancholy sound of Ravel's Ma Mère l'Oye. Even the titles hint at the connection: The Chinese Merchant and Prinsessa Ruusunen - La belle au bois dormant. The final Brave General is a cheeky-cheery impudent fellow whose woodwind solo march suggest a jaunty CO of the bedroom playbox. There you have it: the Finnish composer Uuno Klami - a captivating composer whose tonal-nationalist-impressionistic style moved later in life a little towards the neo-classical. The suite's four movements are pretty trifles, expectedly more nationalistic but not at all ambitious. They rush lightly, dream contentedly; Sibelian idylls each one. The Waltz that tops off the Pastoral Suite is Gallic and rather at odds with the rest. The Scenes are taken from the 1930s film 'The Struggle for the Homestead' and their pastoral credentials are a facsimile of those for the suite. The Sibelian wind writing in the Sunday Morning movement is unmistakable and a delight comparable to the innocent country suites of Dane, Ludolf Nielsen (on Da Capo). There is a tendency towards bombast in some places but that is in line with the overall concept which is dramatic and intense. Puukko has a clear voice, youthful in timbre with a dark kernel that makes his dramatic outbursts thrilling. In fortes he has an almost metallic brilliance; not unsuitable for a future Wotan. One of his teachers was Esa Ruuttunen - himself a wonderful Wotan at the Finnish National Opera. All this is finely demonstrated for example in Halt! (track 3) or the very energetic delivery of Ungeduld (track 7), where the sound of the piano is rather hard. He has the capacity to sing softly, inwardly with a very beautiful half-voice. Danksagung an den Bach (track 4) is a good example and so is Der Neugierige (track 6) where especially the middle section 'O Bächlein meiner Liebe ...' is sincerely done. There is, though, some slightly hesitant intonation and the voice is not absolutely steady. It seems that he is short on breath. This is no prevailing problem, though. The last three songs (tracks 18 - 20) are heartfelt and finely nuanced and the long Des Baches Wiegenlied (track 20) shows him at his very best. It is exquisitely sung.The overall impression is of a well-schooled singer with a beautiful and surprisingly powerful voice, which seems to be divided into two halves. Although he works hard on applying the right dynamics to each song - and succeeds very well in many cases - the remaining impression is of a slight monotony. He can't quite produce the light and shade nor can he colour the voice sufficiently. There is also a certain rhythmic stodginess. Comparing him to Herrman Prey in a 1974 Philips recording, the older singer is lighter and more vivacious, mostly also at a swifter tempo. Puukko plays safe by choosing uncontroversal middle-of-the-road speeds. The recording is good, apart from the bass heaviness I mentioned earlier, and the balance between singer and piano is fine. Having listened to this recording three times within a couple of days I have come to like his powerful and unfussy approach. This is a powerhouse of a performance recorded with restless confidence. Would that Luosto had encountered one of Arnold Bax's least known scores, the Rhapsodic Ballad (a work from the 1930s) also for solo cello. There was space for it here. Contrary to fear (expectation) the Crumb Sonata is not at all a modernist piece. Early in provenance it can be grouped with the Symphony and the Pocahontas Suite. It is at heart close to the Kodaly. Harvey's work is self-evidently passionate and has a theme of decidedly Irish contour and sentiment. It is likely to yield rewards over repeated hearings. Lindberg's work rasps, grunts, birdwhistles in the highest harmonics, grumbles and shudders in line with avant-garde tracks. I found it totally dense and opaque. The problem is my lack of understanding although the gypsying and grating at 06.02 is an access point. We will leave it there.If you are in the market for a single CD of solo cello music this could easily be your 'man'. Luosto's name is one we will hear more of. In 1945 he wrote the incidental music for the Marin Drzic play, The Prodigal Son, at the Finnish National Theatre. It's a light sequence as befits a comedy. The Prelude to Act I is a busy little march lit by racing and glinting orchestral piano entwined with chortling woodwind. It sounds rather like a Nordic rumba as if something from 1920s Milhaud or Ibert. Again this would be ideal Classic FM material. The great baritone Hynninen (b. 1941) sings the two Madrigali and one Serenaadi which are grouped around the three orchestral preludes. These are light and winning serenades - the Nordic equivalent of Neapolitan romances with a typical dash of sun, beauty, sadness or regret. That orchestral piano again makes its presence felt in the warmly pensive Prelude to Act II. It cleverly uses the material of the first Prelude but at a honey-slow pace. The final Prelude is more urgent with that ringing orchestral piano and soloistic woodwind pressing forward aided by chugging string ostinatos. There you have it: the Finnish composer Uuno Klami - a captivating composer whose tonal-nationalist-impressionistic style moved later in life a little towards the neo-classical. Around that date, the peace of the countryside and the lake landscape typical of Finland, combined with the proximity of the capital, attracted several artists to settle in the area. This resulted in a unique artists' community on the eastern shore of the lake. The first to move in, in 1897, were author Juhani Aho and his artist wife Venny Soldan-Brofeldt. They were followed by artists Eero Jarnefelt and Pekka Halonen and, a few years later, composer Jean Sibelius. The Tuusulanjarvi artists' community was much more than justa place to live. It was a venue for arts and artists that hosted numerous distinguished Finnish and foreign visitors over the years. It was also a base for the 'young Finns', apolitical movement that strongly advocated independence from Czarist Russia. The groundwork for Finland becoming an independent nation was in fact laid on the shores of Tuusulanjarvi. Symphony No. 11, only the first movement of which was performable after Tubin's death, shows the composer returning to the neo-classical manner of such works as the Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, allied to his newly luminous scoring.Neeme Järvi recorded the Ninth and Tenth symphonies for BIS very successfully. As usual, he tends to be a bit swifter than Arvo Volmer in the slow movements, but here Volmer's slightly more measured serenity accompanied by beautiful string playing from the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra easily renders these performances the equal of Järvi's, and some listeners may very well prefer them. In any case, the differences are slight, and the recorded sound of this release is excellent in every way: warm and ideally balanced, with superior depth and transparency. This is music well worth getting to know, and these interpretations make the process as easy and enjoyable as we have any right to expect. This contrasts with the little Religioso. The 1953 Sonatina was written for the composer to play rather than to any commission. It has some of the centred placid feel of the Bagatelles but its rumpled explosive air is redolent of Shostakovich. The dissonance has cleared for the Two Little Preludes written in 1943 while Kokkonen was a young officer in the Finnish Army conflict with the USSR. This is melodious and springy music - playful and wistful. Pielavesi is saturated with nature impressions absorbed during summer holidays at his brother's home. Lyrical and free of discord it epitomises the Scandinavian summer in language that darts and lulls. It has a vaguely French Ravelian accent but the Finnish voice is strong. It is a sheerly lovely piece across movements entitled: Preludietto, Nocturne, Rain, Clouds at Evening and Morning Wind. The last piece with its cut-glass and brittle spray of notes is is the most original of the five. Young proficient pianists should seek out this music - it will captivate.
