In world music, few if any other, musicians are held in such esteem as Nigeria's King Sunny Ade. In a career that stretches back to the 1960s, the man has proven to be a dynamic and enduring influence, taking juju music (a derivative of an indigenous percussive style in Nigeria; also, contrary to popular misconception, the term has no connection to magic!) and bringing it onto a global stage.
Following the success - critical and commercial - of 1982's 'Juju Music', there followed 'Syncro System' (1983) and 'Aura' ('84). Both continued the style and sound which had taken everyone by surprise on 'Juju Music'.
Feted with awards and success down the years, the spread of world music over the past three decades can easily make one take it all for granted. You can easily breeze over the times when this form of music was seen as daring. King Sunny Ade And The African Beats were the band who brought it all into focus for the rest of us. Remember that when you're listening to these two albums. Not only are they hugely entertaining, but rivetingly this isn't part of history - it IS history.
