After the astonishing and unprecedented success of the early Fifties, Johnnie Ray's career tailed off during the later Fifties... and after. The lessening success was compounded by a cocktail of personal problems, but he still recorded prolifically, and this 5-CD set documents his recording career from 1957 to the end of the 1960s. He cut several albums, long unavailable, that are justly regarded as daring and innovative pop vocal milestones; these include 'Til Morning', 'Mr. Cry', and an album released in England only, 'A Sinner Am I'. His hits from this era include Yes Tonight Josephine, Build Your Love On A Strong Foundation, and I'll Never Fall In Love Again. All are here.
In addition to his last Columbia sessions, this set also includes Johnnie Ray's recordings for Cadence, United Artists, Liberty, Decca, Groove, Reprise, and Pye, as well as a 72-page hardcover book by Ray's biographer, Jonny Whiteside, that details the singer's precipitous personal decline. The vocal artistry of Johnnie Ray has never quite achieved the recognition it should. He was, as Tony Bennett and others have observed, the missing link between Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. Contemporary popular music would not have sounded the same without him.
