Description
41 tracks across two discs exploring the origins of gothic music.
An offshoot of Post-Punk movement in the early 1980s, Goth quickly became a label for bands as diverse as The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees and, later, The Sisters Of Mercy, as well as for the music they played and for the followers of these groups. With the opening of London's Batcave club in 1982 the scene develop into a genre of its own and the most all-encompassing of sub-cultures, Identifiable to outsiders by an obsession with things morbid and a penchant for black attire. Goths were in fact the latest in a cultural lineage stretching back to such literary figures as Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Baudelaire and ETA Hoffmann.
This collection documents the rich and eclectic musical heritage from which the pioneers of the scene drew their inspiration - often finding their pulse in surprising places. From the French romantic compositions of Berlioz and Saint-Saens, to the chilling refrains of Carl Orff's 'Carmina Burana', rubbing shoulders with the grief laden lament of folk traditional 'All My Sorrows' and Robert Johnson's haunting 'Hellhound on my Trail'. Featuring 41 tracks in all and including extensive sleeve notes by music historian Alan Clayson detailing some of the darkest, most macabre and occasionally ridiculous music ever committed to wax.
