Description
Polk Brockman of Okeh records discovered Narmour and Smith at the Winona fiddle contest organized by Doc Bailey in 1927
Narmour and Smith was a popular old-time string band active during the 1920s and 1930s. The fiddler of the group, William Thomas Narmour, was born in Ackerman, Mississippi, on 22 March 1889. His family moved to Carroll County when he was seven, and he lived there for the rest of his life. Narmour originally learned how to play on a cigar box fiddle, built for him by his father, who was also a fiddler, and was 'discovered' by OKeh Records at the 1927 Winona Fiddle Contest. He played with his neighbour - the guitarist, Shellie Walton Smith, who was born on 26 November 1895. Narmour recorded more than fifty 78s between 1928 and 1934. His first recordings were for OKeh Records and after it collapsed he moved over to Victor. Narmour and Smith had five sessions recording with each other--one in Memphis, two in Atlanta, one in New York, and one in San Antonio. Smith played guitar on all the numbers apart from 'Rose Waltz,' where they decided to swap instruments.
