Description
Texas Alexander was a short man with a deep, bellowing blues voice. He may have had connections with Lightnin' Hopkins and Frankie Lee Sims.
Texas Alexander was from a small town in Texas called Jewett, in between Dallas and Houston. It was here that he first started to sing on the streets and in church. He started to build a reputation through doing gigs. He is known for his personal and unique tenor voice and hollering style which is very reminiscent of field singing. He was very difficult to accompany because he had a freeform style.
'He was a very difficult singer to accompany; he was liable to jump a bar, or five bars, or anything. You just had to be a fast thinker to play for Texas Alexander. When you been out there with him you done nine days work in one! Believe me, brother, he was hard to play for. He would jump-jump keys, anything. You just have to watch him, that's all.'
