After that meeting she was touring the world performing with his trio as well with him as duo, resulting in this recording in 2005. Roberta remembers: 'There were no partitions, no isolation booths, no headphones, no over dubs. The sound would be just what you would hear, had you been in someone's living room playing among friends. We had this list of tunes that we knew we liked, but (by choice) no arrangements, no rehearsals, no predisposed 'structures', in one word, no 'concept' other than letting the music flow and being as open as possible to anything that could happen in the moment. Hagans' place in the spotlight, Masters is keen to stress, shouldn't diminish the importance of these other musicians on Sui Generis. 'They're all active participants and collaborators in this whole thing,' he says. In his book 'Kill 'Em and Leave' James McBride sums up the importance of Pee Wee Ellis 'the principle architect of James Brown's sound'. The ironic thing about Pee Wee's entry into the Brown cosmos was his original motivation: he wanted to earn money to be able to devote himself more to his true love, jazz. In 1957 he met Sonny Rollins outside a saxophone repair shop. From then on Pee Wee flew down to New York once a week to have one-to-one lessons. This led to a lifelong friendship. After ending his work with James Brown Pee Wee helped to develop the sound of the legendary CTI label. After touring with Maceo Parker on the 10th May 1993 the Pee Wee Ellis Trio with Dwayne Dolphin on upright bass and Bruce Cox on drums took to the big stage at the Hofheim Jazz Festival. A few days later, they recorded Pee Wee's first ever jazz album in Cologne's 'Schmuckkästchen' club. The New York Times voted the resulting CD 'Twelve \u0026amp; More Blues', one of the best in 1993. 1994 the trio came back to Cologne and two evenings were recorded. A selection of tracks was released on CD as 'Yellin Blue'. Here is the complete first evening from March 21st 1994 captured in pristine audiophile sound. Why the title 'The Storyteller'? After Pee Wee´s death, a musician wrote in a letter to the editor in response to the obituary in the New York Times: he had played in a support band for Van Morrison in the 70s and heard the stories in Pee Wee's solos night after night during the US tour and found them to be the greatest lesson and joy of his life. Recorded in Studio A at New York's Power Station on June 16, 2024, the album celebrates the mastery of the exceptional musician Marshall Allen as a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, bandleader, teacher, and guardian of Sun Ra's unique legacy.\u003cbr\u003ePerhaps this day will one day become part of the collective jazz memory, for what we are experiencing here is a simultaneity of the non-simultaneous, projected into the future, a time machine traveling through 100 years of jazz, out of the free approach of the Sun Ra Arkestra and in its signature groove right into the heart of swing - with a century-old jazz master as captain. That in itself is a superlative. We are even more inspired by the power with which the virtuoso Marshall Allen continues his life's vocation.\u003cbr\u003eAs a tribute to the life's work of Marshall Allen, Frank Kleinschmidt of IN+OUT Records invited the Sun Ra Arkestra into the studio with 24 musicians in the largest possible line-up, with the goal of documenting the music in its polyphony and expansion in space and time in the best possible way.
