Honey's Sweet and So is She
During WW2, many an American serviceman took comfort from the friendly voice of Dinah Shore as it trilled from a field radio in the middle of nowhere. Her many broadcasts for the Armed Forces Radio Service provided a reassuring link with home. She was the pretty girl from down the lane. Her appeal was not limited to the armed forces. For listeners in blacked-out British homes she provided a voice of normality, shining throughout the chaos. Her 'Command Performance' programmes, retransmitted by the BBC, reflected her warm persona. Born in Winchester Tennessee in 1916, she showed musical prowess from an early age - often singing for customers who came to her father's store. When she was eight, the family moved to Nashville where her dad opened a department store. Dinah secured a singing job on the local radio station. By fourteen, she was singing in night clubs in and around the town. At about this time, she started to be called 'The Nashville Nightingale'! After graduating from Vanderbilt University in 1938, she headed north for New York. After exposure on small radio stations, she was picked up by NBC. Fame quickly followed.
