Description
Through a series of hits, he set the style for the generations that followed.
In the early 1950s, Hank Williams was the King of Country Music. Among pretenders to his crown were Hank Snow, Webb Pierce and Eddy Arnold. Then there was Lefty Frizzell, who hit the ground running with the success of his initial release, If You've Got The Money (I've Got The Time) coupled with I Love You A Thousand Ways. In 1951 he had four records simultaneously in Billboard magazine's Country Top Ten. Later that year he joined the Grand Ole Opry, seemingly headed for the dizzy heights.
Over the next few years, Lefty scored many chart successes, his progress hampered only by his temper, his liking for the bottle and ... Rock 'n' Roll.
Undaunted, throughout the 1960s and 70s, he continued to record and perform - his popularity slowly waning. In 1963 his recording of Saginaw, Michigan was a massive hit, re-establishing his headliner status.
This is a selection of his best material.
