Description
Dave's tragic death a few years ago whilst on the road makes this re-issue a tribute to a musician who had created much already but undoubtedly had the potential to become of the most important acts on the current blues circuit. The further tragedy is that Dave was doing everything right - he was a sensible and hard working guy who could deal with business, was happy to slog it out on the road and knew that making a great album every now and then is the framework on which to build a sustained career. Dave was a Mississippian through and through. His first musical job was as rhythm guitarist for Booba Barnes and he served his apprenticeship in numerous small clubs and juke joints until his first serious opportunity came up with a Fat Possum deal in 1996. That album launched him to a national and international market but things fell apart for that label at that time so Dave was seeking a re-launch in 2001 when this album was cut. This album demonstrates that great records are invariably collective efforts. Start with a super talented artist (as here) then add a great producer, superb songs, a funky band and recording and mix work that captures the power of the music. And the music here' If you insist on a category, it's modern downhome with touches of soul and funk. I have been struck by the number of warm and affectionate tributes received here from ordinary blues fans who have seen his gigs and perhaps talked to him and who obviously admired him as a person as well as a musician.
