Description
The Queen of the Gypsies
Esma Redzepova - Teodosievski was born just after World War II in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, along the River Vardar celebrated by Homer in the Iliad. She brings to my mind the little girl of the legend. Her voice brought together the Balkan states, Europe and the world in the midst of the Cold War, before the fall of the iron curtain.Because she was regularly asked to sing as if her voice could cure all sorrows, she started to collect all kinds of songs from her close and distant family. When she was in primary school, she halted in front of a world map, starting to be convinced that the songs from India, Persia, the depths of Asia and the Mediterranean were coming to her so that she could make them heard by others: her family, the town of Skopje and all the unknown corners of Macedonia. As a child, she already felt like a sovereign in the land of song.
