The album TZITZIKIA – the one you have in your hand – is the first solo recording by the Greek Katerina Fotinaki. Within its boundaries is an aural account which openly bears traces of what has been a meticulous and relentless venture: to explore a certain musical and poetic path. A path that leads to that which is the quintessence of song, music, art, the human soul. That said, embarking on and pursuing such a journey is exceptionally long and difficult for all genuine and conscientious artists.In itself, Katerina Fotinaki's musical proposition already has more strength, meaning and worth than any analysis or presentation by an eminent specialist can ever bring forth. That being the case, what hope is there for a mere amateur of my sort?Especially at that very moment when her work is engaging in bitter battles in the most remote regions of the instinct. An instinct that is struggling against itself in order to be recognised and approved or not... by itself!It's that creative inner struggle by an artist for the validity of her habitual praxis – and by extension, her artistic production – which makes of that act an “art” and also makes Art a superior human achievement.Those considerations give me the courage to continue my flirtation with the album coming out in Paris.All the songs Katerina has chosen – whether they be her own compositions or arrangements – are songs that bear a great poetic weight. And to each one of these songs she offers us a luminous vocal interpretation. One supported by vocal qualities and colours which belong to those ancient times when poetry and nobility of soul ruled culture, and which also guided that culture's fighting spirit. An interpretation suggestive of bygone eras when art was the ultimate goal of life and mankind was alive to – if only temporarily – its re-emergence.In this very personal musical proposition, Katerina Fotinaki mitigates the intensity of the sentimental urges within herself and tempers her passions – thus permitting her voice to become something else, expressed at times by flights of great delicacy, full of reserve, inwardness, and always with great elegance.
