A Star from the Age of Thirteen
Little Esther Jones was discovered by bandleader Johnny Otis at a talent contest. Thirteen when she first entered a studio, she was drawn into a world that used her ruthlessly, and acquired habits that threatened and diminished her life. Esther Jones was born in Galveston, Texas on December 23, 1935. Five years later, her parents separated and she went to live with her mother in Los Angeles. Three years later she returned to Houston, where her father was living, and spent the next four years commuting between Texas and California. She began to listen to the records of Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae and Billie Holiday. After her discovery at the talent contest, she joined the Otis entourage and recorded Double Crossing Blues with him. The record was a national hit and brought both Otis and Esther to the general public's attention. Along with a series of hits came alcohol and drugs dependency, with which she would battle for the rest of her life. In spite of this, she did make serious comebacks - the first in the 1960s. In the 1970s she was Grammy-nominated four times. Here, though, is Little Esther in her prime - when making hits came as naturally as singing itself.
