Sax Magic Quartet
The Cuarteto de Saxofones de Santiago de Cuba, also known as the Magic Sax Quartet,
was formed on July 4, 1995 by four prominent instrumentalists. The new formation was
an opportunity for them to do important work by fusing different styles that span a wide arc from jazz to Cuban son.
All of them can take competent solos when appropriate, but the most important thing
for them is merging to achieve a great overall sound.
They have received rave reviews from the magazines Jazz Man, Jazz Podium, and World
Music, all of which lavish praise on their virtuosity and the rich, novel sound that sets
them apart from all other ensembles of this type.
In an interview granted to the magazine Down Beat, Paquito D'Rivera was enthusiastic
about their interpretation of the tune 'La Comparsa' by Ernesto Lecuona, which they
play with eloquence and versatility on Jane Bunnett's CD 'Alma de Santiago'.
In 2007, as part of that year's America Cantat Festival, the Sax Magic Quartet performed
in the Amadeo Roldán Auditorium in Havana along with stars of the Cuban music scene
including pianist Chucho Valdés and the diva of Buena Vista Social Club, Omara
Portuondo.
