Ellis was the backbone of the James Brown Horns for years and then a synonym for 'the real funky tunes' that was celebrated around the world. When Ellis celebrated Christmas the music became something different, the Christmas tree and Santa Claus had to watch out for the dancing crowds. Unless Santa Claus has long since hung the wrong beard in the branches and is dancing with them.
Pee Wee Ellis was a very important member of the James Brown band in the 1960s, appearing on many of Brown's most notable recordings and co-writing hits like ''Cold Sweat'' and ''Say It Loud I'm Black and I'm Proud.'' In addition to a very successful solo career, his career also includes a longtime recording and performing relationship with Van Morrison and fellow James Brown alum Maceo Parker. A versatile tenor player, Pee Wee Ellis was one of the great all-time jazz & funk saxophonists. Mr. Ellis passed away September 23, 2021 at the age of 80.
