In the rural South, in places like Arkansas, country, blues and the new beat came together in a raw and direct way. This is exactly where Arkansas Rockers Vol. 1 begins.

This compilation focuses on a scene that is often overlooked, even though it played an important role in shaping rock'n'roll. Arkansas was never a major recording center, but it was a place where countless young musicians took their first steps - often aiming to make it to Memphis.

Some of them later became world famous - including Johnny Cash, Sonny Burgess, Billy Lee Riley and Conway Twitty, all of whom have roots in Arkansas and carried the sound far beyond the state. But alongside these well-known names, the focus here is on the 'second tier': artists like Larry Donn, Bobby Lee Trammell or Don Head, whose recordings now stand as some of the strongest examples of Arkansas rock'n'roll. Eddie Bond, closely connected to both the Memphis and Arkansas scenes, also belongs in this context.

Many of these musicians recorded for small labels, produced their own singles or played clubs and radio shows across the region. These are the recordings featured on this CD.

The result is a direct and unpolished sound that captures the spirit of the late 1950s and early 1960s. You can hear the influence of rhythm & blues as well as country - and above all, the drive to be part of something new.

Arkansas Rockers Vol. 1 is more than just a collection of rare tracks. It is a look at a regional scene that made its own contribution to the history of rock'n'roll - often unnoticed, but full of energy.

Track Listing

Bobby Lee Trammell - Arkansas Twist

Earl Smith & Night Cappers - Black River Bay

Kenny Owens - Long Lost John

Ken & The Goldtones - If Somebody Loves You

Larry Donn - That’s What I Call a Ball

Bobby Brown - Please, Please Baby

Chuck Comer - Little More Lovin’

The Thunderbirds - Flying Saucers

The Thunderbirds - A Whole Lot of Shakin’

Sylvia Mobley - Every Time I See You

Sonny Deckelman - Lonely Weekends

Buddy Phillips - Coffee Baby

Charley Maybee - Little Judy

Mike McAllister - I Don’t Dig It

Johnny Tolleson - You’re in Love with Yourself

Montie Jones - Moonshine

Luke Royer - One’s All the Law Will Allow

Tonya Dee - Shake This Town

Eddie Bond - Big Boss Man

Leo Castleberry - Teen Age Blues

Don Head - Goin’ Strong

Chuck Brooks - Spinning My Wheels

Jimmy Ford - You’re Gonna Be Sorry

Morgan Twins - Johnny Come Lately

Olen Bingham - Love Them Every One

Additional Details

Label: Bear Family Records

Genre: Pop/Rock

Language: English

Run Time: 60:00 mins

Region: 0

Release Date: 06/05/26

UPC: 4000127177384
