An entirely modern celebration of the Celtic tradition from Montreal's power trio Bùmarang
DespiteEcho Land being Bùmarang's debut, there is a clarity, confidence and focus that reveal the Montreal-based 'Celtic power trio's' (The Guardian, PEI) storied past. Together with their Scots Gaelic name, literally meaning boomerang, and the album title, Echo Land, they allude to a reflection, a return and a resolution to find answers in the past.
David Gossage (flute, whistle, guitar), Kate Bevan-Baker (violins, vocals) and Sarah Pagé (harp, vocals, harmonium, bouzouki) have individually performed in their own ensembles including Orealis, Tree Talk and The Barr Brothers. They've also toured with the likes of Patrick Watson, Hey Rosetta!, Kid Koala, Michael Bublé, Lhasa de Sela and Cirque du Soleil.
Brought together on stage in 2015, the three virtuosic players combine diverse influences of classical, jazz, African, and Indian music together with a love and appreciation for Celtic folk songs. It results in a unique and innovative take on what was once old.
After an initial string of bad luck: broken instruments, cars frozen in ice and an incomplete recording session, they brought in Vid Cousins to co-produce and mix, along with accompanying instrumentation from worldly percussionist Ivan Bamford (Land of Kush), drum master Kevin Laing (The Besnard Lakes), and Moog and guitar ace Leif Vollebekk.
The result flies us over the realms of Celtic music, travelling the ages and back again. Bùmarang share loves: born, lost, regretted and celebrated, and bring us out of mists of uncertainty to a clarity of our place within this time. They succeed in making new what is old, and they nourish our souls with their entirely modern celebration of tradition.
