A Shooting Star that Shone Briefly
Chuck Willis' brief career, 1952 - 1958 spanned both jump and R&B and he has generally received less than the credit he deserves. Fortunately his music and his songs remain to tell his story. He was a breakthrough pioneer who, after a few years of regular appearance on the R&B charts, had several huge 'crossover' hits. In all he had fourteen R&B hits between 1952 and 1958 and five pop hits during late 1957 into 1958.That was it. He died on April 10th 1958, aged thirty - in hospital for a stomach operation. Despite the shortness of his career his importance to the history of R&B is being continually reassessed, not only for his hit recordings - but for writing songs like It's Too Late and I Feel So Bad which are performed and recorded to this day.
