The continuing story of New York versus Chicago in the Doo Wop Wars hots up as record labels rush to sign up any group of kids hanging around a street corner! This compilation highlights the changes taking place between the more traditional vocal groups and the younger aspirants to the Doo Wop crown. We have selected some of the best examples of this wonderful music. It is worth noting that many groups labelled under the Doo Wop banner had in fact been around performing vocal harmony singing since as far back as 1939 as was the case of The Three Riffs, The Striders and The Whispers. They were more than happy to be signed up by record labels and given their chance at the big time! Two groups emerged during this period that finally made New York the centre of the Doo Wop universe-namely The Clovers and The Drifters. Both groups are featured here with their early hits 'Blue Velvet' and 'Honey Love' respectively, The Drifters of course going on to worldwide fame, but that as they say is another story!
