john-cage-a-room-cd
John Cage - A Room (CD) PREORDER

On this CD pianist Hayk Melikyan shows John cage's musical transformation during his twenties.

Cage was in his late twenties, a Californian, who had served an unlikely apprenticeship under two of the century's great opposites: Arnold Schoenberg, who thought him gifted but harmonically hopeless, is said to have called him 'not a composer, but an inventor of genius', and Henry Cowell whom he had watched reach inside a grand piano to pluck and sweep its strings by hand. The music on this recording follows Cage through this early decade of his life, his twenties. But this is not the music before the transformation. This is the transformation, caught at its threshold, in the years it was actually happening. The selection of works is a very personal statement by pianist Hayk Melikyan.

Track Listing

And the Earth Shall Bear Again (1942) for prepared piano

Tossed As It Is Untroubled (1943) for prepared piano

A Room (1943) for prepared piano

Music for Marcel Duchamp (1947) for prepared piano

Soliloquy (1945) for piano

Two Pieces for Piano (1946) for piano: I

Two Pieces for Piano (1946) for piano: II

Ophelia (1946) for piano

The Seasons (1947) for piano: Prelude I

The Seasons (1947) for piano: Winter

The Seasons (1947) for piano: Prelude II

The Seasons (1947) for piano: Spring

The Seasons (1947) for piano: Prelude III

The Seasons (1947) for piano: Summer

The Seasons (1947) for piano: Prelude IV

The Seasons (1947) for piano: Fall

The Seasons (1947) for piano: Finale (Prelude I)

In a Landscape (1948) for piano

Dream (1948) for piano

Suite for Toy Piano (1948) for toy piano: I

Suite for Toy Piano (1948) for toy piano: II

Suite for Toy Piano (1948) for toy piano: III

Suite for Toy Piano (1948) for toy piano: IV

Suite for Toy Piano (1948) for toy piano: V

Additional Details

Label: Paladino Music

Genre: Classical

Language: English

Run Time: 72:55 mins

Region: 0

Release Date: 12/11/26

UPC: 9120010286773
