Tough, Stripped-down Blues from a Master
This album is a tale of 'one thing led to another'. I had heard a locally produced Butler Twins LP and had been knocked out (listen to their contributions here and you'll see why...). Downhome Blues survivors - hard edged Detroit Blues with deep Southern roots. The people on the local scene were totally co-operative and an album ensued. Playing lead guitar was our hero here, Kenny Parker. And what a storming player he turned out to be - inventive, rocking solos that perfectly complemented the songs, the singing and the groove. A find...! Kenny and The Twins got to England for some touring and, sitting about in the back room of some pub, Kenny and I worked out the deal for this album which was then duly cut back in Detroit. Darrell Nulisch was brought in as special guest and of course, lived up to his fine reputation and he contributed some terrific harp playing and singing. The Twins also of course guested - note Clarence's so, so authentic and deep harmonica styling. Special note also please for Kenny's fine songwriting and original instrumentals, this is a 'no cover' album and all the better for it. Kenny took over the producing role for the next Butler Twins album and another lovely set was cut. But, it was the 1990's and there were people around throwing some serious money about and the Twins were signed to another label taking Kenny with them. Things didn't work out as planned and everyone seemed to go their separate ways. But it's 20 years later and Kenny's back on the scene and getting back on the road. He has voiced a deep and serious enthusiasm about re-lighting the flames under his career. I think he can re-establish his position as one of the top axemen on the scene. He will no doubt be making more albums and refining his style but this album stands as the firmest foundation that there could be for a career relaunch and it also stands as another one of those 'moments in time' that makes the record biz such a fascinating game.JOHN STEDMAN
