Music with Cuban roots
All these pieces date back at least 25 years. They have aged well. If there is a discernible theme, it is that of the nostalgia of the émigré. Litanies, for flute, harp and string trio (1981) is an elegant and telling ceremonial, evoking specific memories, religious and secular, of the composer's childhood in Cuba. The title of the thoughtful Asonancias, for solo violin (1982), refers to rhyming vowels in Spanish poetry. Elsewhere, as in Canciones (1983), four Lorca poems sung by Marina Tafur, de la Martinez disarmingly embraces simple, romantic lyricism to the point of sentimentality when responding to words.
