So, in 2018, when saxophonist and 'cultural organizer' Dave Rempis had the idea to assemble this quintet for a visit to the city by double bassist and 'cultural organizer' Luke Stewart was visiting town. Four pillars of Chicago's musical wisdom gathered around the D.C.-based double bassist. It was for the Exposure concert series at Elastic Arts, hence the name the five men chose for themselves when they extended the experiment and performed at another series, the Options Series, at the Experimental Sound Studio, before releasing their debut album on Astral Spirits. There are many concert series in Chicago, each building on the ideas of the last.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut it doesn't stop there; we also hear scenes from everyday life in Red Hook, Washington, London, Brussels, and Saalfelden on this second album, which was recorded in a studio this time. The quintet's improvisations are peppered with sounds from the world, field recordings that take the music beyond some of its usual haunts. 'This project explores the idea that music takes us on a journey around the world,' explains Luke Stewart, 'in communion with the Universe. We observe and gather experiences that translate into sound, in a spirit of universal connectivity.' Among the real conditions of improvisation are the place and its spirits. There is the idea, yet another idea, that creative music draws its strength each time from a place on Earth and from everything that converges there. And that, in return, it opens up a space, a door, an energetic corridor there, leading to other places, real or imaginary. This is also what the old blues songs meant when they spoke of coming back home and bringing back home which is what 'Foreign Landing' and its somnambulistic clarinets convey here. The end of a long quest, a home, a prism.
