Description
Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates' was a television musical based on Mary Mapes Dodge's classic children's story about a poor Dutch family struggling to overcome adversity. It was directed by Sidney Lumet and featured an original score by Hugh Martin (Meet Me in St. Louis). With the ice-skating Hans Brinker played by Tab Hunter, one of the biggest screen idols of the 1950s, the musical was seen on American prime time TV in February 1958 and became one of the most watched shows that season. Hunter's love interest in it was played by recording star Peggy King.
Around the time of the telecast, Hunter was riding high: a year before he had scored a worldwide number one hit with 'Young Love' and after 'Hans Brinker' was to start filming the movie version of Broadway hit musical '[Damn Yankees'.
Apart from the nine tracks recorded for the LP release (a collector's item) performed by Tab Hunter, Peggy King and opera star Jarmila Novotna all included here, we have added four songs performed by Hunter including his chart-topper 'Young Love' and 'I'm a Runaway' from the film 'Gunman's Walk', and another sixteen songs by songbird Peggy King, most of which are appearing on CD for the first time.
The 16 page booklet includes a forward by Hunter and rare production photographs from 'Hans Brinker' from the private collection of Tab Hunter. The total of 29 tracks must make this CD appeal to fans of music theatre and 1950s pop material.
