Description
The ZANZIBARA collection is devoted to popular Swahili music from the eastern coast of Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Somalia, Comoros), dominated by ''taarab'' (from the Arabic ''tariba'', stir, ecstasy), music appeasement, festive music also: voices, violins, 'ud, qanun, accordion, guitar, bass, keyboards, ancient and modern sounds unite to encourage meditation or dance. The lyrics, formerly often improvised, now more written, are part of the tradition of Swahili poetry. Archival recordings from the 1920s to the 1980s are complemented by particularly interesting contemporary recordings. This collection is directed by the great specialist Werner Graebner, whose erudition and musical sense are undeniable guarantees of quality. The editorial approach is similar to our now famous and unavoidable Ethiopiques series: rare and fascinating music, richly documented booklets. 1960-1979, The Golden Age of Taarab in Mombasa features recordings by the Tanzanian label Mzuri Records from the 60s and 70s.
