For five decades Mantovani was one of Britain's best-loved orchestra leaders.
For five decades Mantovani was one of Britain's best-loved orchestra leaders, one of the biggest album sellers in the history of popular music, and a name that was always synonymous with lush and distinctive orchestral arrangements.
He was born Annunzio Paolo Mantovani in Venice in November 1905 and his father himself was a successful musician, being the principal violinist at the famous La Scala Opera House in Milan. Young Mantovani started playing the piano while still only a child and later studied the violin. His family moved to England in 1919, when he was fourteen years old and four years later Mantovani made his professional debut as violinist.
