Thanks to a truly magnificent operatic voice, Mario Lanza became one of the biggest recording stars of the Fifties, with three million-selling records, including 'Be My Love' and 'Because You're Mine', as well as becoming a very successful film star, winning the hearts of fans from all around the world.

Lanza's parents were poor Italian immigrants and he adopted his stage name (he was born Alfredo Cocozza) from his mother's maiden name, Maria Lanza. At the age of 15 he began studying singing and eventually started doing local concerts. After being drafted into the U.S. Army during the second World War Lanza sang in many concerts for his fellow soldiers and was billed as 'the Service Caruso'.
