Description
He packed a lot of playing and leading into his short life, as did his equally gifted brother Jimmy, a clarinet great.
When Tommy started out he was heavily under two-beat Dixieland influence which he never entirely abandoned, when he turned mostly to dance band swing. A major influence was the Jimmy Lunceford Orchestra which - rather unusually for coloured bands of the time - managed to combine precision with hard driving swing while retaining a feeling of loose relaxation. Dorsey's band could play ballads beautifully and could also turn on a fierce heat for the more exciting numbers. Amusingly, the most distinguished arranger who did so much to shape the band's sound was Sy Oliver. And where did Tommy get him? From the Lunceford Orchestra. It was Sy who wrote this selections opener 'Opus One' and who is heard doing a little singing on the penultimate track 'Chicago'.
