Description
Indie rock meets dance floor. German independent stars cover rock legends.
The German trio HEROINA recorded early nineties of the last century one of the most exciting albums ever. The musicians took popular titles from REM, Patti Smith, Prince, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers and Edit Piaf and interpreted them according to their own ideas. The result was one of the most danceable albums ever to come out of Germany - directly on the tuntables.
Band-founder Gün Yan Sen remembers:
On a Sunday in April 1990 Tobias Gruben and Matthias Arfmann came from Hamburg to Cologne in order to add vocals to a backing, which I already prepared for the most part. The backings belong to the Patti Smith song âDancing Barefoot'. Tobias sang the lead-vocals and Matthias 2nd voice. It was a long day with breaks at a Mexican restaurant in Deutz as well as in the Rose Club and The Station. At any time we found a name for our project, formerly âHeroine' (ex the Dancing Barefoot lyrics), lateron HEROINA. Close to 4 a.m. the mix was ready, finally the (close to) sleeping, laying Matthias pushed any button of the Emu-Sampler (you can listen to it at the final end of the vocal-version).
After the first HEROINA-title has been taped to easy, the decision about a continuance of the project was easy as well. We all had our main-bands, viz. Tobias DIE ERDE, Matthias KASTRIERTE PHILOSOPHEN, and I at that time had a good start with DONNA REGINA. If there's a program for HEROINA at all, then this: Only cover-versions, quick recorded, changing cast.
The predominant part of the HEROINA-album developed at the Hamburger-Knochenhaus-Studo: âThe One I Love' (original from R.E.M.), âThe Cross' (Prince), âSubmission' (Sex Pistols), âSkin Deep' (Stranglers) - only âDans Ma Rue' (Edith Piaf) was an additional song out of the production in Cologne. The each short recording sessions spread over various months, different guest musicians like Emilio THE HIDDEN GENTLEMAN Winschetti came and left, the hard HEROINA-core still remains the trio Arfmann/Gruben/Janssen. In Autumn 1990 the product was ready, Lothar Gärtner published the first (and only) HEROINA-album on his label Strange Ways, which at that time stuck in its infancy. It never came to live-concerts, HEROINA remained a pure studio-project, a hidden playground.
