With this release, labeled Volume 1 in a projected survey of Beethoven's complete piano trios, these three exceptionally fine Finnish musicians turn in the most urgent, dynamic, and compelling readings of the two op. 70 trios I know. It's too early to tell, of course, if Latvala, Ylönen, and Lauriala will be the ones to produce the ideal cycle I've long sought, but with this first release, they're off to a very promising start.
