It has been said that Antonio Vivaldi (167S - 1741) was as important for the development of the concelto as was Haydn forthe development of the symphony or the string quartet. The extensiveness of Vivaldi's production of concertos has been detrimental insofar as it has been assumed on the basis of a few familiar works that all the others were cast in the same mould. It is true that Vivaldi churned out ritomello forms with dialogue between soloist and orchestra, but on hearing new works there is increasing cause for amazement at the ingenuity and ability to surprise evinced by the Venetian composer. â Antti Häyrymem
