Description
Hildegarde, whose trademark was her long white gloves, was born in Wisconsin in 1906 and started her career in vaudeville but only achieved fame and success after arriving in Britain in 1933 to perform in London's plush Café de Paris.
Hildegarde remained in Britain for the next few years where she quickly established herself on radio and on the stage. A booking at the exclusive Club Casanova in Paris took her to the continent where she remained for several years before returning to the USA just before World War II an even more polished performer. While in Paris she introduced her signature song 'Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup', a song she recorded many times throughout her long career. The version included here was recorded in New York in 1941 and is appearing for the first time on CD like many of the other tracks here.
The 1940s back in the USA were busy years for Hildegarde: she made her Broadway debut in 'Keep 'Em Laughing', had two hugely popular and long running radio series and made many recordings, some of which charted and are featured here. She was also the highest paid cabaret performer at this time and regularly made the Best Dressed Women List.
She continued to perform and her 80th birthday concert at Carnegie Hall was a sell-out and finally retired after giving her farewell concert in 1995. Hildegarde died in July 2005 in her 100th year.
