Description

Popular in the Face of the Depression

By the late summer of 1934, Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell had enjoyed a seemingly endless string of popular releases covering nearly six years. The duo was one of the biggest sellers for Vocalion in the early 1930s. Despite the Depression, they had visited the studios every year except 1933. A small coterie formed, which included pianist contemporaries Peetie Wheatstraw and Walter Davis. Only Carr's untimely death in early 1935 brought their run to an end. Here are Carr's later recordings, which show he maintained his inimitable style to the end. Also included is a selection of recordings from his circle - showing that talent was not confined to the master alone. Remastering is to JSP's usual high standard.
