Description
Sharp, Skilful and Sure
This album could be a chapter in Lucky's rise to the top - one of those sets that lays down a quality marker which gets him noticed by the wider business. It's overdue. Here's 21st century blues where the artists show profound awareness of the music's roots. Lucky is a master of all musical trades and his collaborator here, Steve Washington - songwriter, producer, arranger - is the son of the legendary Fats Washington. So ... traditional blues with a cutting edge. Most important is Lucky's magnificent guitar work - producer (and label...!) are determined to give him space and freedom - and he doesn't let us down... Lucky has now created quite a body of work for JSP - always tough and powerful. Note Tamara Peterson's guest collaboration on 'Love Me'. Tamara & Lucky's album 'Darling Forever' was one of the decade's most adventurous blues/roots albums and is worth seeking out. And if Tam's guesting on one of Lucky's shows beg, borrow or steal a ticket. Most of the songwriting here comes from Steve Washington and the songs fit Lucky like a glove. Steve understands Lucky, his music and his style. The lyrical themes are vignettes of ordinary life which Lucky shapes into his own. This is no 'revivalist' music!JOHN STEDMAN
