Beautiful BLUE LP is both an excellent sampler for listeners not familiar with salsa, and a high-quality set of Cuban dance music for veteran listeners and dancers.

''Salsa,'' became widely used in the 1970s as a term for Cuban dance music but had already been around in various forms for decades. Based in Afro-Cuban music but also influenced by musical trends in New York, Puerto Rico & throughout Latin America, salsa has been very popular for over a half century yet never seems to run out of inventive ideas & new talents.

Beginning with the 2nd generation of the Buena Vista Social Club (A Buena Vista) performing 'Songeros de Verdad' with plenty of spirit, assertive percussion and a very good lead singer. 'Cesar Mora' features a talented female lead singer (Maria Canela) on a catchy performance that includes some prominent trombones.

While bassist-singer Richard Bona has earned a strong reputation in jazz circles, on 'Te Dikalo' his vocals fit very solidly into salsa. Richard Lemvo & Maikin Loca's 'Santo Antonio Do Zaire' not only features their winning vocals but an impressive brass section. Yuri Buenaventura on 'Au Café Des Delices' offers a change of pace, and is quite danceable.

The 2nd half of the program starts with the late great conguero Francisco Aguabella performing stirring music on 'Guajira Candela.' Alexander Abreau, Havana D'primera & Prulo y ala Tribu are exuberant on 'La Negra Tomasa' which features a playful melody that is pushed by a prominent cowbell. Septeto Santiaguero's 'Amor Silvestre' is a simple piece given a strong forward momentum during a performance full of vitality. The memorable set concludes with an encore from the warm voice of Yuri Buenaventura on 'Je me suis fait tout petit,' a rhythmic vamp that is quite singable.

Each of the 9 selections on this sampler are rhythmic, catchy, & very danceable, matching the singers with irresistible rhythms by creative percussionists, high musicianship, and creative arrangements.
