Acoustic jazz and swinging fusion featuring the Blue Note recording saxophonist James Carter

Our music began in the UK in Birmingham during the September of 2018. Every week for an hour and a half we would record improvisations on piano with or without guitar or on a midi keyboard. Occasionally we would play something that had been written beforehand. These improvisations were taken each week to Bristol. Sometimes they were cut up and rearranged, but as time went by they were left intact. Programmed drums and sometimes bass were added as were alto and tenor saxophones and trumpet. By April we had 93 compositions. It took 5 weeks for us to go through the music and select 15 tracks to develop further. We worked and rebuilt the drafts of our demos as an author rewrites pages of an evolving novel. All the horn parts were rewritten and rerecorded and a few extra piano and Rhodes parts were added. Our music then went to New York, where two saxophonists, a trumpeter, a drummer and three rappers recorded over and under our music in a studio in Brooklyn. We then took our music back to the UK in London where finally we mixed and mastered this year long project.
If you draw a straight line between Birmingham, Bristol and London on a map it forms a triangle and conveniently illustrates a musical analogy. Music from both past and present New York can be imagined as a series of waveforms, passing through the triangle of the three UK cities like light through a prism, creating a whole spectrum of new sounds. To carry forward this analogy, if Gershwin's 'Rhythm changes' provided Thelonious Monk with a structure to base his tune 'Rhythm-a-ning', the music of New York has provided inspiration and a certain foundation for us to create our first record 'Prism-a-Ning'.
