What happens to art in the Internet age?

What happens to art in the Internet age?

The philosophers, artists and exhibition makers in this documentary believe that endless reproduction liberates art from a muddled art market and an undemocratic exhibition circuit. A couple of critics wonder whether the urge for physical objects is really just a nostalgic fetishism. Today, taking selfies is part of the experience of visiting a museum. Digital technology has completely transformed the experience of art forever.

The spirit of Walter Benjamin circles above the documentary #artoffline. The German philosopher argued in 1936 that the technological reproducibility of artworks changes the nature of art in an essential sense-- the aura of the work could not possibly survive such doubling. Almost everyone you hear in #artoffline-- philosophers, artists, exhibition makers-- disagrees with Benjamin. They think that, in the era of the internet and virtual reality, the demand for authenticity has become irrelevant. The focus on the value of physical objects is a form of fetishism, in their minds; one that is maintained by museums and galleries.

Can the internet liberate art? #artoffline explores multiple views in order to let viewers decide what they think is good for the future of contemporary art. But aren't we losing something if the physical artworks disappear?
