Description

Deanna Durbin was discovered by an MGM talent scout while at junior high school, appeared in a short film with another juvenile, future star Judy Garland and then moved to Universal Pictures. There, she was an overnight sensation in her feature film debut 'Three Smart Girls'. The film was a box office hit and the world fell in love with Deanna Durbin and her singing.

Successive popular films like 'One Hundred Men And A Girl', 'Mad About Music', 'Three Smart Girls Grow Up' followed by 'It's A Date', 'Spring Parade', 'Nice Girl'' and the Technicolor film 'Can't Help Singing', with gorgeous songs by Jerome Kern, confirmed her popularity further.

By 1946, Durbin was becoming increasingly unhappy partly due to the studio putting her in inferior films. Her last four films did not fare well at the box office and, aged 27, she said goodbye to Hollywood and moved to France seeking a 'normal' life and privacy. She lives in France to this day.

Most of the gems on this CD are derived from unique studio lacquers for use in the film making and many tracks are different from the ones used in the finished film or Durbin's commercial recordings. These alternate takes include extra verses or alternate sections. Songs recorded for but never heard in Durbin's films include 'Carmena Waltz', 'Sweet Molly Malone' and 'Brahms' Lullaby'. Other tunes were used in Deanna's films, but here, you will finally hear them without any interruption by dialogue and/or sound effects.
