Zydeco and Blues Blend Effortlessly
A great band all of whose members are completely on top of their game. The voices on many tracks are Fernest himself and and Victor Walker. Victor is a real surprise, and brings a wide degree of styles to the table. Thus we have deep blues, that interesting South Louisiana mix of swamp soul and pop, and zydeco of course, all seamlessly pulled together by a tight working band. When this album was released, Fernest seemed to be the first of that next generation of Zydeco accordion players. He brings 'pure' Zydeco to the mix. Victor Walker was the revelation. A bass player and standout singer he also played some nice overdubbed piano on a few tracks. 'Jockey' Etienne was the drummer on Slim Harpo's 'King Bee' and he's a perfect rhythmic foil to the leaders. Chester Chevalier was the youngest of the bunch. It was his fooling about with some deep blues stylings at the beginning of the session that led to the indispensible I Can't Live Happy. Victor Walker was killed soon after in a bar room brawl. This album can only heighten a sense of loss. Fernest went back into the local scene and until his death in 2008 rarely ventured out again.
