Description
Succinct rock that eschews embellishment, but, through harmonies and stabbing synths, claws deep into the your ear.
Their 38 minute record delivers a succinct rock statement that leaves behind frivolous embellishment, yet contains plenty of gems right from the first listen through. âTrue Heartsâ serves up stabbing synths alongside expansive vocal washes of âoohsâ that kicks off the album in high gear and sinks its claws deep into the listenerâs ear. They keep melody in the forefront of the entire album, with the title track also rich in classic keyboard tone and vocal harmonies but more subtle in its delivery, showing their comprehension of knowing when less is more. The chorus of âBaggageâ is an especially fine example of this, where a single-note guitar part accompanies Rossâ heavily emotional delivery of âYou and Iâve got too much baggage/Letâs pretend that theyâre gifts weâve sent us/But theyâre wrapped so tight we canât open up.â On âUninvitedâ the drums give the semblance of an off-kilter time signature but throb along in unison with the synth part, and âHemorragic Killsâ 7/4 time signature propels an intricate picked guitar section that leads into a vocally haunting climax. Closing the album with âLast Chanceâ, they come back around to the rolling pop-rock that opened the album and deliver a strong finish with some stellar vocals.
