Description

Heartbreak and redemption wrestle in original '60s-tinged torchsongs ranging from acoustic ballads to punky psych rock.

Baltimore singer-songwriter Ian Jones creates a good feeling on stage and a natural sound in the studio. His love for mid-60s British rock and early '90s post-punk can be heard blending and colliding in the warm, analog tones of his new album, 'Can't Conquer Me.' The 1st official solo album by this long-time indie-rock producer and coffeehouse singer offers up 11 original tracks about heartbreak and redemption, from the mid-tempo torch rock of 'Andover' and the hippie love fest 'Heartbreaker' to the Pixies-ish 'See You Tonight' and the explosive punk-vs-psychedelic 'Secret Admirer.' Rounding out the set is a selection of folk, blues, bossa nova and straight-ahead rockers that underpin soaring melodies with captivating arrangements. A child of the DIY punk ethic, Jones opened his own recording studio at the age of 22 in the heyday of indie-rock and launched his own record label, Sun King Records, in 1996. While producing records for beloved '90s labels such as Teenbeat and touring with nationally known indie bands, he still trod the stages of Washington DC's coffeehouses and rock clubs with his own off-kilter brand of folk-meets-rock under the name Bombardier Jones. Sun King Records released his 'This Is The King of Suck' (1996), 'Dustbowl' (1997), and Jonesamatic's electronic rock 'Cha Cha Cha' (2003). In 2007, Jones launched the comeback of Jamaican roots reggae founder Claudius Linton with 'Roots Master,' a CD of long-lost '70s reggae classics. Together as Kingman & Jonah, Jones and Linton produced the 2008 duet CD 'Sign Time' at Tuff Gong in Jamaica and performed at SXSW in 2009, garnering chart placements in 3 nations and widespread critical acclaim.

Now Jones has returned to his 90's indie scene roots with 'Can't Conquer Me.' Working for the first time with an outside producer (Philip Stevenson, of Carnival of Souls), Jones' songs become fuller and stronger, and Stevenson's all-analog Scary Clown Studio gives a distinct '60s ambience to the torchy material.
