Kevin's trumpet playing is steeped in the hard bop tradition and his influences are obvious. Perhaps most noticeable is his hankering for the language of Kenny Dorham and Lee Morgan with splashes of Art Farmer and Blue Mitchell. This is not to say however, that he is simply a good imitator who plays the vocabulary of a certain time period and is done with it. There is a distinctness to his tone, a uniqueness to the way he starts and finishes his musical thoughts and a bank of ideas that seems endless. He has managed to keep that old school vibe while injecting a modern tinge to the way he plays the trumpet. It makes it such a joy to listen to.
