Description
Greek singer Maria Farantouri is known worldwide as 'ideal interpreter' of Mikis Theodorakis' songs. She played a vital part in the development of Greek musical culture during the last decades. She is said to be the most authentic interpreter of the New Greek Song. A sonore, melodic counter-alto and highly dramatic power of expression are the most eminent characteristics of her voice. Her fame started in 1965 when she reached the top with her first record, Theodorakis' 'The Mauthausen Cycle'. She left Greece in 1967 after the military dictatorship had begun, and protested against it in hundreds of concerts all over the world until 1974. The critics celebrated her with enthusiasm.
