Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Ernest Hemingway, 'The Old Man And the Sea' stars Anthony Quinn as Santiago, an experienced but aging Cuban fisherman who is suffering through a lengthy string of bad luck, having not caught a fish in over 80 days. Once the most successful fisherman in town, other fishermen notice his problems feeling he maybe too old to fish. The parents of his apprentice Manolin, forbid him to go out with Santiago. Yet every night, Manolin vists Santaigo, helping him prepare for the next days fishing excursion, providing encouragement.

Santiago makes the decision to change his habits and venture far to the north of Cuba, into the Gulf Stream where he feels his luck will change. He soon hooks up with a massive marlin but the mighty fish starts dragging the boat further away from his home port. For two days, he fights the massive marlin, suffering from exhaustion and badly damaged hands, and on the third day, finally manages to bring him to the side of his boat, killing his catch with a harpoon.

But the marlin, dead but still bleeding from its wounds, starts to attract ravenous sharks who start taking bites from the body of the marlin. Santaigo manages to kill 5 sharks, protecting his catch, but before he can make it home, the sharks devour almost the entire carcass, leaving just the skeleton. Finally returning home, he leaves his boat, leaving the bones of the fish attached to the side, and dragging the heavy mast on his shoulder, returns home to fall into a deep sleep.

The next morning, the other fishermen discover Santiago's boat with the bones attached. They measure the carcass and are in awe when they realize the massive marlin measures 18 feet in length. When Santiago awakens, Manolin tells him the other fishermen are sorry for how they've treated him and that Manolin and Santiago can now fish together once again.
