The city of New Orleans is also known as Crescent City and referred to as such in the sleeve notes. The name derives from the original town-the Vieux Carré, also called the French Quarter which was built at a sharp bend in the Mississippi River, hence Crescent City. The aural feeling of this album is varied, full of hot recordings, and offers an eclectic assortment of recordings. The songs are not used in chronological order they are used to fit with the albums direction and add a variety of sound. As always, the sequence of artists and styles sit comfortably side by side and this album focuses on Rhythm & Blues, Rock 'n' Roll, and up-tempo Blues music. The artists are intermixed throughout the series to make a more diverse assortment of sound and artist. The album inaugurates with one of the State's most important artists and producers who also used the J&M Recording Studio, the Edgar, Louisiana born Dave Bartholomew who worked for decades together with his protégé Fats Domino creating many hits. The additional assortment of artists includes Jump tunes from band leaders Paul Gayten and René Hall's whose Orchestra creates an amazing sound for the Willie Joe recording. The R&B enunciation from Smiley Lewis, Percy Mayfield, Clarence Garlow, and Jack Dupree is a 'down yonder' sound and adds depth of tone and variety. 'Song Thrush' Nellie Lutcher has a driving boogie beat and her brother Joe is the jazzy side of the region's heritage. The Blues legends are Little Walter, Slim Harpo, and Leroy Washington. Several artists only gained regional reignition or minor hits and these include, the wonderful voice of Earl King, Elton Anderson who merged R&B and Rock 'n' Roll and Eddie Bo whose voice is rich in New Orleans brogue. Rock 'n Roll hitmakers include the previously mentioned Fats Domino, Bobby Mitchell, and Chris Kenner. It may come as a surprise to some people that Rock 'n' Roll hitmakers Lloyd Price and Richard Berry became famous on the West Coast were, Southern Bred.
