This new Tantara CD from the Fall tour is literally the only released recordings of the Kenton orchestra during 1969.
This new Tantara CD from the Fall tour is literally the only released recordings of the Kenton orchestra during 1969. It not only fills a vital gap in the Kenton calendar, but is clearly an important step along the route that led to the formation of the 1970s full-time road band. Among the personnel are several players that would become key members, including Dick Shearer, lead trumpet Jim Kartchner, highnote specialist Dennis Noday, and saxophone/arranger Willie Maiden.
But the player causing the biggest buzz around the bandstand wasn't one of these names at all, but a 23 year-old youngster just graduated from Stanford University. Tom Harrell had been playing trumpet with local groups around San Francisco since his early teens, but Kenton's was his first job with a name band. Tom brought with him all the solo skills and originality associated wjth an experienced professional, a talent Stan was quick to recognize. Harrell solos on no fewer than seven of the eleven titles on this program.
