Set during the late Qing Dynasty, King of Beggars follows the arrogant yet good-hearted So Chan (Stephen Chow, Shaolin Soccer), the spoiled son of a wealthy family whose exceptional kung fu skills are rivaled only by his laziness. After attempting to cheat his way through the imperial exams to win the hand of a beautiful courtesan (Sharla Cheung, God of Gamblers), So is exposed and publicly disgraced, stripped of his wealth, and cast into poverty.

Left destitute and humiliated, So Chan finds himself among society’s outcasts and gradually transforms from a fallen playboy into the legendary “Beggar So,” the leader of the Beggars’ Sect. With the help of his loyal companion (Ng Man-tat, Fight Back to School) and newfound humility, he hones the Drunken Fist style to defend the downtrodden and challenge the corrupt forces threatening the empire.

Mixing slapstick humor, period adventure, and martial-arts spectacle, director Gordon Chan (Fist of Legend) blends Stephen Chow’s signature “mo lei tau” comedic style with heartfelt heroism, making King of Beggars one of Hong Kong cinema’s defining hits of the early 1990s.
