Born in 1949 in Little Rock, Arkansas, sax player John Stubblefield looks back on a rich working experience with the likes of Nat Adderley, Kenny Barron, Lester Bowie, Anthony Braxton, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, Kip Hanrahan, Freddie Hubbard, Abdullah Ibrahim, Charles Mingus, Tito Puente, Diana Ross, McCoy Tyner, and the Mingus Big Band. On Bushman Song, he was a pioneer in fusioning ethnic music and funk/jazz, 'the chant of prehistory and the chant of the technological urban complex' (Stanley Crouch), sounds from Martinique and the Bronx.This re-release on CD opens with an electric version of the title track and closes with the acoustic version of the same title. Percussionist/vocalist Mino Cinélu explores his native Caribbean tradition with his song Mwé Malad O, while Calypso Rose is an all-percussion piece of age-old African heritage.
